Every visit to Cambodia Elephant Sanctuary begins with one of our guides. They are trained to educate visitors about elephants and are experienced and well-versed in elephant behaviour, habitat and conservation, so your time here becomes a real learning experience rather than a quick photo stop.
What your guide does
- Welcomes you and introduces the elephants and their stories, during the first 25 to 30 minutes of the program
- Explains how to behave safely around elephants: where to stand, how to approach and when to give them space
- Leads each activity: preparing the elephants’ food, the mud bath and the river bath
- Answers your questions about elephant diet, health and behaviour
Guides and mahouts work together
Your guide works alongside the mahouts, the caretakers who look after the elephants every day. The mahouts know each elephant’s habits and moods, while the guide makes sure the group understands what is happening and that everyone stays safe.
Questions to ask your guide
- Where did each elephant live and work before coming to the sanctuary?
- How much does an elephant eat in a day? (Read our article on elephant diets.)
- Why do elephants love mud and water? (See why elephants need to bathe.)
- What makes an elephant sanctuary different from other elephant attractions?
Our guides love questions, and curious visitors usually have the best day.
Plan your visit
The program lasts about two hours with hotel pick-up and drop-off in the Siem Reap area. See the visitor guide for pick-up times, what to bring and prices.
