What is an elephant sanctuary? An elephant sanctuary is a protected place created for the care, rehabilitation and conservation of elephants. It gives them a safe, natural environment to live in, away from poaching, habitat loss and exploitation.
What an elephant sanctuary does
Sanctuaries rescue elephants from many situations, including animals that have been orphaned, injured or kept in captivity for entertainment or work. The goal is welfare: letting elephants live in a humane, natural setting with room to roam and express natural behaviour.
Care and daily life
Elephants are given large areas of land, appropriate food, veterinary care and the company of other elephants. Trained caregivers monitor their health and provide enrichment to keep them physically and mentally stimulated.
Education and conservation
Many sanctuaries run education programs that raise awareness about the challenges elephants face in the wild. Visitors can learn about the species, observe elephants in a natural setting and sometimes help feed or bathe them under the guidance of experienced staff.
