How do you know if an elephant is pregnant? Detecting elephant pregnancy is tricky, because elephants do not show the obvious signs some other animals do. Experts use several methods together.
Hormone analysis
One of the most reliable methods is hormone analysis. Vets and researchers test the elephant’s dung or urine for hormones such as progesterone, which rises during pregnancy.
Ultrasound imaging
As with humans, ultrasound can be used to see the fetus and confirm pregnancy. It is non-invasive and can give clear images of the developing calf.
Behaviour and physical changes
Some elephants become more cautious, rest more or show more interest in food. There may be a slight enlargement of the abdomen, though this is hard to spot on such large animals. A previous successful birth can be a clue too, but it is not conclusive.
