History of Elephant in Cambodia
Elephants have played an important role in Cambodian history and culture for centuries. In the past, they were used for transportation, agriculture, and warfare, and were highly prized by the Cambodian royalty.
During the Angkor period (9th to 15th century), elephants were used for both transportation and labor in the construction of temples, reservoirs, and other infrastructure. They were also used in warfare, with the Khmer Empire’s army employing thousands of elephants in battles against their enemies.
In more recent history, elephants continued to be used for transportation and labor, but their numbers have dwindled due to habitat loss, poaching, and the destruction of forests. The Cambodian government has made efforts to protect the remaining elephant population, with the establishment of protected areas such as the Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary and the Seima Protection Forest.
Today, elephants remain an important cultural icon in Cambodia, with elephant motifs and sculptures featuring prominently in traditional Khmer art and architecture. They also play a role in the country’s tourism industry, with visitors able to experience elephant rides and learn about their conservation.
